GIS importance to government, academic and private sectors, and economy
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2013)—Governor Steve Beshear signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 30 – Oct. 4, 2013 as Kentucky Geographic Information Systems Conference 20th Anniversary Week to highlight the significance of GIS for state and local governments and private sector businesses.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combines the power of a database with map visuals and web applications, providing a unifying framework to help resolve complex issues in the fields of environmental protection, pollution control, land use, natural resources management, preservation and conservation. GIS allows for entities to better serve customers and constituents from new highway construction to helping emergency responders.
The Commonwealth Office of Technology (COT) has worked closely with the Kentucky Association of Mapping Professionals (KAMP) to organize the 20th Annual Kentucky GIS Conference, which will attract participants from Kentucky’s colleges, universities, K-12 schools, municipalities, private industries and citizens who will learn how GIS technology is applied.
