OFFER FROM AUTODESK
President Ellington reported that Autodesk had offered to present a five-hour informational overview of the geospatial functionality in the AutoCAD Map 3D and AutoCAD Civil 3D software, free of charge. If KAMP accepts this offer, we will need to locate a venue accommodating about fifty attendees, and we will announce and advertise the event.
While all agreed that this would be an interesting opportunity to learn about the Autodesk software, concerns were expressed that KAMP sponsorship of such an event would imply KAMP endorsement of the software or that KAMP would be subsequently obligated to provide similar informational opportunities to all interested vendors. Board members wondered if it might be possible for Autodesk to organize this event on its own with KAMP simply announcing that its members were invited to attend, or whether it would be appropriate for KAMP to sponsor an event highlighting a vendor which is not a KAMP corporate member. On the other hand, it is clearly a part of KAMP’s mission to provide informational opportunities such as this as a benefit to KAMP members. Sponsoring an event like this would build KAMP’s credibility as an organization providing value-added opportunities to the Kentucky geospatial community. And it would work to KAMP’s benefit to be recognized as the preeminent liaison between geospatial vendors and the Kentucky geospatial community.
After considerable discussion, Stephen Berry moved that KAMP sponsor and coordinate an informational event featuring Autodesk for the purpose of allowing KAMP members to become more aware of available geospatial technologies. KAMP will close the event by touching on the networking and educational benefits of KAMP, reminding attendees that KAMP membership supports events that bring software leaders such as Autodesk and Microsoft to Kentucky, and encouraging attendees to become KAMP members. Marc Pearson seconded, and the motion passed.
The meeting of the Executive Board of the Kentucky Association of Mapping Professionals was adjourned on 5 December 2007.
