Trisha Brush came to the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission and the PlaNet GIS Partnership (now LINK-GIS) from Miami County Kansas. She had been very involved in KAM (Kansas Association of Mappers). Realizing that there was not a parallel organization in Kentucky she began thinking about the creation of one.

Like minded individuals Trisha found GIS and other mapping professionals within her acquaintances that had the same vision for The Commonwealth. The first visioning meeting was held at the Kentucky GIS Conference in Fort Mitchell in August 2002 in order to gauge interest in such an idea. Kyle Snyder a colleague of Trisha’s shared the vision of KAMP and became a staunch advocate, and a key player in the formation and development of KAMP. Christy Davis (Powell) also became critically involved, and wore many hats in order to make KAMP a success.

Constitution by laws and Code of Ethics Prior to the initial meeting Kyle Snyder drafted the initial constitution and by laws with much input and review from Trisha Brush and Christy Davis. These documents were based on the like documents of KAM.

Founding Meeting at the Berry Hill Mansion Feb 11, 2003 Despite snow to the north, the founding group gathered in the music room of the Berry Hill Mansion in Frankfort. Trisha Brush and Kyle Snyder ran the meeting that introduced the constitution by laws and Code of Ethics, The inaugural board was elected and committees were established. Many members paid there membership first dues at this meeting. Afterward many of the attendees retired for lunch at a local Mexican restaurant. Later that day several of the new board opened the KAMP bank accounts. Patti Royster agreed to open and check the P.O. Box that would be opened for the association. Frankfort was decided on as the location due to its central location in the state. The articles for incorporation as a nonprofit were submitted on February 18, 2003.

LOGO A temporary logo was used in the first year which consisted of only a blue shape of Kentucky and the Initials KAMP across it. A contest was held soliciting logos; the winning logo was to be selected by popular vote at the KAMP booth at the KY GIS conference in 2003. The winning logo was by Marvin Benfield Graphics Coordinator with the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission. He was awarded a free 1 year membership for his winning logo.

Involvement with KAPS KAMP’s relationship with KAPS was initiated by Susan Carson-Lambert and John Harrison. John invited us to a Board of Directors’ meeting on December 6, 2003. We were asked to give an overview of KAMP and brief history of how KAMP became an organization. We were also asked to share ideas on how the two groups and professionals could work together. The KAPS board consisted of 24 members from around the state. Trisha Brush and Kyle Snyder attended the Saturday meeting. As a result of the meeting KAMP was asked to attend the annual KAPS conference in Lexington with free booth space, and has been invited back every year since that December meeting. At the 2004 KY GIS annual conference KAPS members participated in a GIS/Surveying roundtable session. In 2006 KAMP was asked to participate in the KAPS conference by offering a session on Intro to GIS along with a GIS/Surveying Roundtable discussion which seemed to be successful. At the 2006 KY GIS Conference local KAPS members participated in a Surveying 101 session, in turn KAMP members provided KAPS with a GIS 101 course for continuing education.
