WORKSHOP # 1 (Computer lab)

Introduction to GIS Web Mapping Applications – Ben Koostra, Limestone & Cooper

Level: Intermediate; Capacity: 15; Cost: $40

 

This workshop will provide the participants the opportunity to build their first Web Mapping Application with ArcGIS Viewer for Flex. Topics covered will include:

 

  • Customizing the out-of-the-box ArcGIS Viewer for Flex
  • Connecting to Kentucky map services
  • Add other popular publically-available map services to your app
  • Configure “widgets” to add GIS functionality to your app

 

 

WORKSHOP # 2 (Own Equipment Optional)

GISP Certification Program - J. Kyle Snyder, GISP, Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission

Level: Beginner; Capacity: 45; Cost: $25

 

This workshop will detail the GISCI Certification Program for GIS Professionals. Started on January 1, 2004, this is a recognition program for established GIS professionals. It is a non-examination, portfolio-based system. Strategies for filling out the application as well as detailed information about the history of the effort and the Institute will be provided.  We will review each form and how it is to be filled out.  As well as review several actual completed applications. Bring your application for GISP (downloadable from: http://www.gisci.org/application_materials.aspx)  – on paper or a laptop – and we can work through them together.  The workshop will help each participant develop a to-do list for gathering documentation and completing the forms

 

 

 

WORKSHOP # 3 (Own Equipment)

Editing in ArcMap 10 - Kevin Cary, GISP, Western Kentucky University, Center for GIS and Jun Yan, PhD, Western Kentucky University, Dept. of Geography and Geology

Level: Beginner; Capacity: 25; Cost: $40

 

This workshop will focus on the fundamentals of editing with ArcMap (ArcView) 10.0.

To have the benefit of the full hands-on experience, the participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops with ArcView 10.0 with at least SP1 pre-installed on the system (http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcview/eval/evaluate.html); the ability to connect to the internet is desired. A limited number of KCTCS’s cloud ArcView 10 instances will be made available for access over the internet; these will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrants will be given datasets for the workshop exercises.  After completing this workshop, you will be able to (1) edit point, line, and polygon features and attributes; (2) work within a snapping environment; (3) have a basic understanding of map topology; (4) work with tools in the editor, advanced editor and topology toolbars; and (5) georeference scanned maps and digitize features from them.

 

WORKSHOP # 4 (Computer lab)

Introduction to ArcGIS Server - Vince DiNoto, Kentucky Community and Technical College System

Level: Intermediate; Capacity: 14; Cost: $40

 

This introductory hands-on workshop is for those users who have created map at the desktop level and who have little knowledge of the functionality or implementation of ArcGIS Server version 10. A working knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop 10 is required for this workshop. The participants will create .mxd files from ArcInfo version 10 utilizing personal/file geodatabases.  Once the database and .mxd files are created they will be configured to be used with ArcGIS Server.  The discussion will include how to set-up the ArcGIS Server.  The discussion will also include creating of feature class services utilizing a SQL/SQL Express database as well discussing of Flex and Silverlight viewers (participants will not create feature classes or use the viewers due to time limitations).  Participants will receive step by step handouts to facilitate the learning of the processes.  Participants may also bring their own shapefiles to be used in the .mxd creation.

 

WORKSHOP # 5 (Own Equipment)

Using the 2010 Census DataKelly Karres, US Census Bureau, (Charlotte, NC) and  Stephen M. Berry, GISP, Clark County GIS

Level: Beginner; Capacity: 40; Cost: $25

 

This hands-on workshop will focus on available 2010 Census and American Community Survey Data and the procedures used to create customized GIS Data Products from U.S. Census Bureau data files. To have the benefit of the full hands-on experience, the participants are asked to bring their own laptops with ArcView 10.0 (http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcview/eval/evaluate.html), with at least SP1 pre-installed; and the system configured to being able to connect wirelessly to the internet. MS Access 2003 or 2007 are also required for full interactive experience. Registrants will be given datasets for the workshop exercises.

Geocaching, is a challenging fast paced adveture where you use GPS equipment to find a location in the real world where you will find a cached item or use information from your location to answer a question.   This year will be Geocaching in  Historic downtown Frankfort Kentucky.  Participants will learn to use professional grade GPS equipment, learn about the History and Geography of our state capital and get some exercise along the way.  The top team will win personal GPS equipment.

 

 

Continuing Education Credits: KAMP workshops may count as continuing education unit and professional development hour credits towards GISP certification/re-certification and other certifications.

 

Workshop Formats: In order to be able to do the hands-on exercise portions of those workshops marked as “Own Equipment”, participants will have to bring their own computers, with internet access enabled and with GIS software pre-installed. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment for those workshops for which it is marked as “Own Equipment Optional”.

Transportation: Transportation from the Capitol Plaza Hotel to the off-site workshops should be arranged in advance.
