Paul Finke, Forest Planner, Daniel Boone National Forest

Jeffrey Lewis, Silviculturist, Daniel Boone National Forest

The Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF) uses an “Integrated Resource Management Strategy” (IRMS) for conducting Landscape Assessments of the 708,000 acres of National Forest System lands it manages.  Mr. Finke and Mr. Lewis will present on Forest Planning and how the DBNF uses the IRMS for identifying projects necessary for moving toward desired conditions described in the Forest Plan.  They will demonstrate how GIS is used to both analyze and present the various management objectives for a landscape area.

Boyd Shearer, Owner, OutrageGIS

Revising the Great Smoky Mountains Trail Map, A Lesson in Scale.  In the summer of 2008, OutrageGIS published a trail atlas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It included many innovative design features on the map not found on other maps, such as canopy cover type, elevation of trail intersections, a new naming system for long trail names, and a companion booklet and GPS data download.  Although sales were strong for this title, OutrageGIS received customer complaints pertaining to scale which they have analyzed and taken into consideration for future map products.  In his presentation, Mr. Shearer will attempt to answer the questions of what scale is good for a hiking map and what they are doing to remake their map into the best map of the park.

Christina A. Pappas, MA, GIS Specialist/Staff Archaeologist, Kentucky Office of State Archaeology

Ms. Pappas will present on how the Kentucky Office of State Archaeology uses GIS to map archaeological sites in Red River Gorge, Kentucky.

Lunch will be provided by Surdex, a leading provider of geospatial data services to a diverse client base (www.surdex.com).

The membership meeting will be followed by a KAMP Executive Board meeting, open to the public.
