ASSOCIATION MEETING PRESENTATIONS
The meeting began with a set of presentations on GIS-assisted emergency response. Capt Kevin Brown (Lyndon Fire & Rescue), Sgt Andy Longstreet (Middletown Fire Protection District), and Angela Scott (Lyndon Fire & Rescue) described the development and operation of an emergency response system based on GIS. Specific issues relating to data collection, addressing, map design, and map book creation were included.
Jeff Leonhard, with Pictometry, demonstrated some of the newest functionality of ?Pictometry Intelligent Oblique Imagery and GIS?. The Pictometry software works with scaleable oblique imagery to extract linear and areal measurements, elevations, and contours.
Ben Koostra gave a presentation on ?GIS Implementation? at the R.J. Corman Railroad Group, headquartered in Nicholasville, Ky. Corman uses GIS for real estate management, tangible asset management, and operation tracking and facilitation across its multi-state railroad services activities.
Christian Kast, with UPS, described how GPS is used to manage air traffic control and airport arrival and departure at the UPS air transport hub in Louisville.
President Ellington urged KAMP members to get involved in the Lexington Green Map Challenge or to consider initiating green map projects in their local communities. Green maps are community-based projects designed to promote community identity and awareness through cartography. Think global, map local.
Lunch was generously provided by Pictometry, one of the newest KAMP Corporate Members.
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
The open meeting of the KAMP Executive Board commenced at 2:50 pm with self-introductions by all present.
NEW CORPORATE MEMBERS
President Ellington welcomed Autodesk, Pictometry, and Garten Professional Surveying as new KAMP Corporate Members. GRW and Wilbur Smith Associates have also expressed an interest in becoming KAMP Corporate Members.
CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE
A report from the KAMP Certification Committee was delivered by Trisha Brush, KAMP President Emerita. The Certification Committee met on 11 February 2008 to devise a survey to gauge the interest in, demand for, and value of professional GIS certification in Kentucky. The survey results will also be used to help define the GIS community in Kentucky, underline the significance of GIS as a profession, and establish foundations for cooperation with the surveying and engineering communities. All interested parties, in and out of KAMP, are encouraged to take the GIS certification survey.
KAMP WEBSITE
Paul Vidal, KAMP web administrator, demonstrated the newest developments on the administrative end of the KAMP web site. The integration of the membership database into the web site promises to be extremely helpful in the administration of KAMP memberships and dues. Comments and suggestions are welcome and should be sent to Paul (web at kampro dot org).
MEETINGS
President Ellington noted that the Autodesk informational seminar, held on 20 February 2008, met with very favorable response. KAMP will consider repeating this event at the Kentucky GIS Conference in July.
There was a general consensus among all in attendance that the format of the present meeting was very good. The self-introductions, in particular, were considered to be very helpful in breaking the ice, re-affirming acquaintances, and establishing professional identities.
The meeting of the Kentucky Association of Mapping Professionals was adjourned at 3:30 pm.
